Muy Bueno: Three Generations of Authentic Mexican Flavor

Muy Bueno cover

“Siéntate a comer, esta muy bueno!” “Sit down and eat, it’s very good!” This was how Jesusita Mendias-Soza always welcomed guests to her table. The same words served as inspiration for her daughter Evangelina and granddaughters Yvette and Veronica, who wanted to honor her memory and preserve their family’s recipes and stories for future generations. They started the Muy Bueno Cookbook blog in 2010 with this idea in mind, and quickly attracted thousands of fans and followers who fell in love with Muy Bueno’s flavorful Mexican recipes, heartwarming family stories, and beautiful photography.

Now they open their hearts and kitchens to an even wider audience in their first cookbook. Spanning three generations, Muy Bueno offers over 100 recipes: traditional old-world northern Mexican recipes from Jesusita’s kitchen; comforting south of the border home-style dishes from Evangelina; and innovative Latin fusion recipes from Yvette and Veronica. Each recipe is accompanied by a full-color photo.

—Publishers Weekly

“Charming family stories combined with richly colorful photos to make this a delightful invitation to cooking.”
—Michele Kayal, Associated Press

“I have always been fascinated with how the foods of northern Mexico joined with the foods of the southern United States to invent a whole new world of culinary possibilities. Cooks from both sides of the border have been creating a delicious, exciting cuisine for the past couple hundred years. The women of Muy Bueno have some fantastic stories and recipes about this. Wow—I truly enjoyed reading it and can’t wait to start cooking!”
—Roberto Santibañez, chef-owner of Fonda restaurants in NYC and author of Truly Mexican and Tacos, Tortas, and Tamales

Muy Bueno is a gorgeous collection and celebration of exciting Mexican recipes rooted in touching family stories and tradition.”
—Todd Porter and Diane Cu,

“This wonderful cookbook is filled with vibrant pictures and authentic Mexican recipes that are easy to make too! I just hope that one of these ladies invites me over for dinner some day!”
—George Duran, celebrity chef

“It’s hard for me to remain neutral about the tales and recipes of Muy Bueno. You see, their stories are my stories, just like many of us whose grandparents came from Chihuahua to Texas and beyond. But you needn’t have an abuelita who blessed generations by handing down her recipes–all you need is the love and spirit that Yvette, Veronica and Evangelina have filled within the pages of this book. Packed with authentic regional recipes, beautiful stories and gorgeous photographs, Muy Bueno is above all else a delicious family love story.”
—Matt Armendariz, and author of On a Stick! and Focus On Food Photography for Bloggers

“Every page invites the reader to step into the richness of Mexican culture, defined by exquisite food and lots of love. To see family recipes – both traditional and contemporary – recreated with so much care is a joy.I personally look forward to making Muy Bueno’s recipes for my own family.”
—Nina Terrero, Web Producer – NBC Latino

as soon as Jackie learns what two teaspoons are, and Cyndi understands that 1 cup of chicken broth isn’t enough if the recipe calls for four cups of chicken broth. Then maybe we can critique the recipes, but, until we get it right, it is going to be thick and sweet mole.

My parents are Salvadorian. They used to call me Hispana Arrepentida because I didn’t want to learn about our roots and wasted to be as American as possible. Now as an adult, married to un gringito…guess who’s making him tortillas and black beans. I’m more hispanic than ever and wish I had embraced our aztec background a bit better, because I’m also leaning heavily on their healing techniques. I so want your book. Congratulations on your success.

    Lorena — January 8, 2013 @ 10:35 am

I came across your blog while searching for a Champurrado recipe right before Christmas…liked the blog and ordered the cookbook on a whim. We lost my grandmother’s recipe for buñuelos a few years ago, so we tried yours for Christmas (my Mom, sister & me). They were delicious! Then we made Cóctel de camarones for NYE and tried the Rajas con suero y queso asadero on New Year’s Day…absolutely delicious. Many of the basics are similar to my family’s own recipes, but I have really enjoyed trying new ones. I’ll definitely try another recipe this weekend. Best wishes!

Ladies your book is amazing! I have tried several recipes, the latest was the stuffed bell peppers, so delicious! And I actually cried while making the tortillas, thinking of my grandma and wishing I had learned from her while she was still with us. It took me a few tries but using your recipe finally was successful in making tortillas “just like grandma’s”. I thank you so much and God Bless your family.
