“Siéntate a comer, esta muy bueno!” “Sit down and eat, it’s very good!” This was how Jesusita Mendias-Soza always welcomed guests to her table. The same words served as inspiration for her daughter Evangelina and granddaughters Yvette and Veronica, who wanted to honor her memory and preserve their family’s recipes and stories for future generations.   13. My parents are Salvadorian. They used to call me Hispana Arrepentida because I didn’t want to learn about our roots and wasted to be as American as possible. Now as an adult, married to un gringito…guess who’s making him tortillas and black beans. I’m more hispanic than ever and wish I had embraced our aztec background a bit better, because I’m also leaning heavily on their healing techniques. I so want your book.   14. Great to hear of an upcoming cookbook, I am from New Mexico but live in California and need some recipes including lenten ones. I remember my mom cooking lenten food especially on Fridays. Of course I was not there to enjoy but I do remember these foods as a child. Anxious to hear when your book is coming out….

    ”sweet tamales” for years i have searched for a reciepe, does anyone know what i’m talking about?

  34. I came across your blog while searching for a Champurrado recipe right before Christmas…liked the blog and ordered the cookbook on a whim. We lost my grandmother’s recipe for buñuelos a few years ago, so we tried yours for Christmas (my Mom, sister & me). They were delicious! Then we made Cóctel de camarones for NYE and tried the Rajas con suero y queso asadero on New Year’s Day…absolutely delicious. Many of the basics are similar to my family’s own recipes, but I have really enjoyed trying new ones. I’ll definitely try another recipe this weekend. Best wishes!

  36. Ladies your book is amazing! I have tried several recipes, the latest was the stuffed bell peppers, so delicious! And I actually cried while making the tortillas, thinking of my grandma and wishing I had learned from her while she was still with us. It took me a few tries but using your recipe finally was successful in making tortillas “just like grandma’s”. I thank you so much and God Bless your family.

      Yes, there is a difference. The hardcover has an additional pantry chapter with ingredients, descriptions, and lots more photos.

And my dad was the cook in the family, He shared his love of cooking with me and I cherish that time, your recipes in the book have reminded me of my childhood memories of cooking with him.   41. My husband is going to get me both books for christmas. That is all I asked for and I’m super excited to get them! Living in Spain its hard to get great homemade mexican dishes. Being from El Paso too its hard being away from family and I really want to make more mexican dishes for my sons since they can’t get it from grandmas and great grandmas house. I love all your recipes!!! 🙂
