Dia de las Madres, Mother’s Day is a day centered on mama. In most countries Mother’s Day is spent giving her the royal treatment. In Spain Mother’s Day is celebrated the first Sunday in May. In Mexico it’s always celebrated on May 10 and it doesn’t matter what day of the week it is. In the United States we celebrate Mother’s Day the second Sunday in May and this year it falls on Sunday, May 13.

On this day children might serve mom breakfast in bed, make beautiful cards for her, recite poems, and shower her with all the cute crafts and cards often made at school. In Mexico mothers awaken to her children or other family members serenading her in the early morning with Las Mañanitas, a traditional birthday and mother’s day song.

I remember when I was a young teen my older cousins, Lydia, Lucy, and their boyfriends at the time taught several of us the lyrics to Las Mañanitas. Carol, Margie, Krista, Julian, Fito, Gordo, my brother Michael, and I all learned how to sing Las Mañanitas while someone played la guitara. Soon after we learned the song we all crammed into someone’s van and then we proceeded to go to each of our mother’s windows to serenade them with this lovely song. As I was writing this post all of a sudden I remembered this event. I remember I had such a great time hanging out with all my cousins and it felt like we were taking part in such a grand and noble act. As I look back, I think we were.

So mom, although we can’t be with you this year for Dia de Las Madres, please know that we are with you in spirit. We will always treasure you and your love for us.

Here’s a sweet drink for you on your special day. We love you muchisimo and can’t wait to see you in June.
