Breakfast of Champions

Happy New Year!

Despite our best intentions, it happens: a night of holiday cheer (and a bit too much tequila) followed by a morning of pounding headaches, nausea, and regret. But what’s done is done and all that really matters is what will make it better, and quick.

When I’m feeling queasy, I find comfort in menudo. Menudo is a wonderfully aromatic soup made of tripe, hominy, and red chile sauce. This trio is stewed for hours with garlic and other spices. The best authentic menudo recipes have been handed down for generations — from grandmother to mother to daughter.

How about you? In the aftermath of one too many cocktails, what are your favorite foods for a hangover?

Our grandmother’s menudo recipe will be printed with the release of Muy Bueno Cookbook.

I love all Mexican food, almost. Menudo is one dish I have not been able to warm up to. But I should keep an open mind and give it another try. In the meantime, I’ll have to not over-indulge with the margaritas. :)

    Feliz Año Nuevo!

I think you have to grow up eating menudo in order to “love” it. A great alternative is posole which we also make. Our recipe is pretty much the same but we use shredded pork instead of tripe. Super delicioso. ~ Yvette

I love menudo and I’m sad I didn’t get to eat some while I was in El Paso for Christmas.. lucky for me I never had a hangover that required it. :) We did have some amazing posole!! My uncle’s wife makes it with Chiken and pork, and uses a little red chile in it.. its the perfect amount of spice and yumminess. Happy new year amiga.. and keep cooking.

Miss you amiga! Wish I was in EP with you to celebrate and eat all that El Paso and our familia has to offer.
